George Washington was one of the country’s first “famous Americans.” Many people displayed his picture in their homes, just like you might show off posters of your favorite “stars” today! The picture shows the Washington family looking at a map of the new American capital. The picture is an artist’s copy of another portrait painted by Edward Savage in about 1790. (You can see Savage’s real painting in the National Gallery of Art.) Why is 1790 an important date for the capital city? Click on the yellow dots to find out. You can also learn more about the rest of the painting.
