Introducing students to our nation's past! During hands-on programs at Dumbarton House, students “travel back in time” 200 years and explore early Washington , DC history. All programs are designed to meet DC curriculum standards in the areas of social studies, history, and language arts.

PROGRAMS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Time Travels

  • Kindergarten-1st grade, 1.5 hours
  • Travel back in time and experience life as a child living in the Capital's earliest days! Students will follow young Charles Nourse through some of his favorite rooms while exploring patriotic symbols.  Students will also design their own American flags, play early American games, and enjoy a light snack.

Capital Quest

  • 2nd-4th grade, 2 hours
  • Take a quest and experience early Washington, D.C. history! By spying for clues, students will learn about the new capital, explore the geography and people of Washington, D.C., read primary sources, and enjoy a light snack.

Explore 1805!

  • 4th-6th grade, 2 hours
  • Explore life 200 years ago! Students will examine the many different people who lived and worked in early Washington. After an interactive tour, they will enjoy “taking” tea, dressing in period-appropriate clothing, and writing with a quill pen. Every student receives a photo memento of their time at Dumbarton House

NEW! Dining with Letters

  • 6th-8th grade, 2 hours
  • What can we learn about life 200 years ago from letters and how people ate? Students connect with the first residents of Dumbarton House on an interactive tour of the Museum that examines primary resources and artifacts. Students will learn to write with a quill pen and enjoy a light snack.

PLANNING YOUR VISIT

All programs are designed to meet DC curriculum standards in the areas of social studies, history, and the language arts. Registered teachers receive a resource packet prior to their visit containing lesson plans and logistical information to prepare for the visit. Or, Download Teacher Resource Packets now:

Registrations

  • Email rsvp@DumbartonHouse.org or call 202-337-2288
  • Programs start between 9:30 & 10:30 a.m. Other requests may be accommodated.
  • Programs are 1.5 or 2 hours
  • A maximum of 30 students can be accommodated. A minimum of 8 students is required.
  • Registrations should be made at least 1 month prior to program date.
  • All programs provide a snack. Please notify staff of any food allergies.

Payments

  • $4 per student (supplies & snack included).
  • 3 required adult chaperones per class FREE.
  • Deposit of $25 due at time of registration.
  • Balance due upon arrival.
  • Cancellations must be made 14 days prior to scheduled program date.
  • No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than 14 days prior to scheduled program.

Special Needs

The Museum's programs are available to all students as the hands-on programs are developed to connect with all learning styles. Given enough notification, Museum Educators can adapt school programs to fit the specific needs of your students. The Museum is wheelchair accessible.

DC Public Schools

Dumbarton House welcomes District of Columbia Public Schools and Public Charter Schools to participate in its programs at no cost.

Register early! A limited number of bus transportation stipends are also available at DCPS and Public Charter schools receiving Title 1 funds.

DC Arts & Humanities Education Collaborative's Arts for Every Student program
Dumbarton House is a participating member of the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative's Arts for Every Student (AFES) program. AFES is open to DC public and charter schools. Through the AFES program, certain grade groupings are eligible for free transportation for Time Travels or Dining by Letters field trips. Homeschool groups

Dumbarton House welcomes homeschool groups and families to Home School History Days throughout the year, and welcomes you to participate in both school and Scout programs as the programs are developed for a variety of learning styles and can accommodate varying ages.

Home School History DayDumbarton House Home School History Day

Join Dumbarton House and Tudor Place for Home School History Days! Home School History Days are similar to those offered to traditional school or Scout groups, but are designed to be more accessible to home school families. Children ages 5-14 years old will "travel back in time" to explore early Washington , DC history!

Dumbarton House and Tudor Place are pleased to offer several Home School History Days throughout the 2009-2010 school year.

In each educational program, students will go on an interactive tour of the Museum, participate in a hands-on workshop, and receive a unique souvenir of their visit. In addition to participating in the program, parents will receive a resource packet with activities that introduce and reinforce the lesson providing a wonderful opportunity for parents and students to learn together.

To better serve home school families who are teaching children of all ages, each Museum offers several classes at one time. Students will be assigned and expected to participate in the appropriate grade level. Please note, programs are typically divided as preK-2nd grade, 3rd-5th grade, and 6th-8th grade.

Cost per Program: $6 per child and $3 per adult. Advance payment is required. Space is limited and registration is "first come, first serve." April 5 Literacy Program at Dumbarton House Only from 10:30am-12pm:

  • Write into the Past – Younger students meet "Mrs. Maria Nourse" who lived in Dumbarton House 200 years ago. After interviewing Mrs. Nourse in the historic house, younger students will "take tea," report about their experiences, and design and illustrate their own picture book.

May 3 Programs at Tudor Place from 10:30am-12pm and Dumbarton House from 1pm-2:30pm:

  • Garden Detectives - Students become garden detectives during an interactive tour of Tudor Place's 5½-acre historic garden. Armed with magnifying glasses students engage in a multi-sensory learning experience by observing a variety of plants, flowers, and wildlife. Older students uncover the scientific principles of classifying a variety of plants, flowers, and wildlife. After the tour, students plant their own garden to take home.

History AT Dumbarton House from 1pm-2:30pm:

Write into the Past
Students meet Mrs. Maria Nourse who lived in Dumbarton House 200 years ago. After interviewing Mrs. Nourse in the historic house, younger students will “take tea,” report about their experiences, and design and illustrate their own picture book.


February 8, 2010: Math at Dumbarton House from 10:30am-12pm and History Tudor Place from 1pm-2:30pm:

Numbers Through Time AT Dumbarton House
Go on an “I-Spy” journey through Dumbarton House in search of architectural shapes commonly found in Federal period houses. After completing the "I-Spy" tour younger students solve a secret code, invent a 19th-century number puzzle, and enjoy a light snack.

Amazing Architecture AT Dumbarton House
Students become architectural detectives, as they tour Dumbarton House to discover how houses were built in early Washington , create a model city of the future, and enjoy a light snack.

Discover our Nation's Presidents AT Tudor Place
During an interactive tour of Tudor Place , students discover the rich history of our nation's early Presidents. Students will uncover artifacts that once belonged to George Washington, Andrew Jackson, and many more! After the tour students experience history first hand, by dressing in period clothing and creating articles and sketches for an early American newspaper.


March 2, 2010 - History at Tudor Place Only from 10:30am-12pm:

Historical Detectives
Students become History Detectives during an interactive tour of the historic mansion. The tour provides students with a better understanding of how daily life changed in Washington D.C. from 1800 to modern day by examining artifacts and documents. After the tour, students work in groups to create their own museum exhibit using reproduction artifacts and primary sources.


April 5, 2010 - Literacy at Dumbarton House Only from 10:30am-12pm:
