Introducing students to our nation's past! During hands-on programs at Dumbarton House, students "travel back in time" 200 years and explore early Washington, D.C. history. All programs are designed to meet D.C. curriculum standards in the areas of social studies, history, and language arts.

ALL NEW PROGRAMS!
Time Travelers
- Kindergarten-1st grade, 1.5 hours
- Travel back in time and experience life as a child living in the Capital's earliest days! Students will meet "Joseph and Maria Nourse" to learn more about how they lived at Dumbarton House. Students will explore what it was like living so long ago, play early American games, and enjoy a light snack.
- Maximum group size: 25 students with 3 required adult chaperones. Minimum group size: 8 students.
Capital Quest
- 2nd-4th grade, 2 hours
- Take a quest and experience early Washington, D.C. history! By spying for clues, students will learn about the new capital, explore the geography and resources of Washington, D.C., read primary sources, and enjoy a light snack.
- Maximum group size: 30 students with 3 required adult chaperones. Minimum group size: 8 students.
Explore 1805!
- 4th-6th grade, 2 hours
- Explore life 200 years ago! Students will examine how people lived, socialized, and worked at Dumbarton House during the early 1800s. After an interactive tour, they will enjoy "taking" tea, dressing in period-appropriate clothing, and writing with a quill pen.
- Maximum group size: 30 students with 3 required adult chaperones. Minimum group size: 8 students.
Parthenon to Portico
- 6th-8th grade, 2 hours
- What does America have in common with ancient Greece? Students will learn how America was influenced by this great civilization by comparing Classical Greek and American ideals of government, art, and architecture. In teams, using elements of Classical Greek design and their own imagination, students will create their own designs for a building they could use today.
- Maximum group size: 30 students with 3 required adult chaperones. Minimum group size: 8 students.
Visit Two Museums in One Day! Georgetown History Adventure School Program
- 3rd-8th grade
- Be a witness to the historic events of Georgetown, the Federal City, and the nation with a visit to Dumbarton House and Tudor Place! Students spend half the day at Dumbarton House, where they learn about life in our nation’s capital 200 years ago! After an interactive tour of the historic house, students enjoy "taking" tea and participating in several hands-on activities. Students spend the second half of the day at Tudor Place, where they learn how daily life changed in Washington D.C. from 1800 to modern day by examining artifacts and documents. After the tour, students work in groups to create their own museum exhibit using a variety of primary sources.
- Program Fees: $6/student; 2 adult chaperones free; $3 for each additional adult;
- 2 hours for the morning program, 1 hour lunch break, 2 hours for the afternoon program.
- Maximum group size: 60 (to be divided into two groups) with 6 required adult chaperones.

Registrations
- Complete the on-line registration, Email Youth@DumbartonHouse.org or call 202-337-2288 ext 225
- Programs start between 9:30 & 10:30 a.m. Other requests may be accommodated.
- Programs are 1.5 or 2 hours. (Georgetown History Adventure Program is a 5-hour day trip to both Dumbarton House and Tudor Place, with 1 hour lunch break.)
- Registrations should be made at least 1 month prior to program date.
- All programs provide a snack. Please notify staff of any food allergies.
DC Public Schools
Dumbarton House welcomes District of Columbia Public Schools and Public Charter Schools to participate in its programs at no cost. Register early! A limited number of bus transportation stipends are also available at D.C.PS and Public Charter schools receiving Title 1 funds.
Payments
- $4 per student (snack and supplies included). (Georgetown History Adventure Program is $6/student; 2 adult chaperones free; $3 for each additional adult.)
- 3 required adult chaperones per class FREE for all other school programs.
- Deposit $25 due at time of registration. Balance due upon arrival.
- Cancellations must be made 14 days prior to scheduled program date.
Special Needs
The Museum's programs are available to all Scouts as the hands-on programs are developed to connect with all learning styles. Given enough notification, Museum Educators can adapt programs to fit the specific needs of your scouts. The Museum is wheelchair accessible.

Homeschool Programs
Dumbarton House welcomes home school families and groups to Home School History Days and Girl Scout Days throughout the year. Organized home school groups are invited to register for School and Scout and Youth Group programs. These programs are developed for a variety of learning styles and can accommodate varying ages. Please read program descriptions for age requirements. Registration is "first come, first serve."
Dumbarton House Home School History Day
Join Dumbarton House for Home School History Days! Home School History Days are designed to be accessible to home school families. Children ages 5-14 years old will "travel back in time" to explore early Washington, D.C. history! Each program will focus on a different aspect of life during the Federal period.
In each educational program, students will go on an interactive tour of the Museum, participate in a hands-on workshop, and receive a unique souvenir of their visit. When available, parents will receive a resource packet with activities that introduce and reinforce the lesson providing a wonderful opportunity for parents and students to learn together.
To better serve home school families who are teaching children of all ages, Dumbarton House offers several classes at one time. Students will be assigned and expected to participate in the appropriate grade level. Please note, programs are typically divided as preK-2nd grade, 3rd-5th grade, and 6th-8th grade. Parent supervised activities for toddlers are also available.
