Bring your Scout troop or den to learn about the early history of Washington, DC and participate in a hands-on workshop at Dumbarton House!

DAY PROGRAMS for GIRL SCOUTS and CUB SCOUTS

Brownie Troop 4749, Historical Toymaker: Overnight Adventure

Programs are offered weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings October-June; please call for availability. Fee of $10 per Scout and $3 per adult includes an interactive tour of the museum, crafts activity and workshop, snack of cookies and juice, and a Dumbarton House participation patch. Programs last about 2 hours. Reservation inquiries can be made by calling the Education Department at 202-337-2288 x222. A $50 deposit is due at the time of registration and full payment is due 2 weeks prior to the program. A 5-Scout minimum is required for all day program reservations.

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL
(Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts; Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Cub Scouts)

fulfills all Girl Scout activity requirements for the “Wave the Flag,” “Try-It and “United We Stand” badge;
fulfills Cub Scout Wolf Achievement 2c and 2g; Bear Achievement 3a, 3d, and 18b; and Webelos Citizen Badge Achievement 1a, 1b, and portions of 3.  
America the Beautiful takes Scouts on an “I-Spy” journey through Dumbarton House in search of patriotic American symbols. After completing the “I-Spy” tour, Scouts learn about the history of our flag and how to show respect for it. Scouts will have the opportunity to share their patriotism in a badge- or achievement-related craft project.

HISTORIC HOBBIES AND GAMES
(Tiger, Wolf, and Bear Cub Scouts)

fulfills Tiger Cub Achievement 1g, Elective 16, and Elective 35; Wolf Achievement 4f, Elective 5c and Elective 20a; and Bear Achievement 8e and 15a.  
Historic Hobbies and Games introduces Cub Scouts to a boy’s life as part of a Georgetown family 200 years ago. Boys discuss their own hobbies, create a historic toy, and play two early American games: badminton & horseshoes.

PERFORMING THE PAST

fulfills all activity requirements for the “Let’s Pretend” Try-It
Performing the Past turns Brownie Girl Scouts into living history actresses!  Girls learn about life in the early 19th century by touring Dumbarton House and miming activities that would have taken place there historically. Girls then show off their creativity by constructing masks, donning costumes, and acting out a story from the past.

PORTRAIT PRIVATE EYE
(Junior Girl Scouts)

fulfills all activity requirement for the “Folk Arts” badge
In Portrait Private Eye girls “read” the paintings in the museum collection to determine the story behind the image. After the tour, girls learn a period dance, create their own family portraits, and produce self-portrait silhouettes.

GIRL SCOUT OVERNIGHT ADVENTURES

Spend the night at Dumbarton House and experience life during the Federal period first-hand! Overnight Adventures are offered weekend nights from 7:30 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. the following day. Fee of $30 per Scout and $10 per adult includes an interactive tour of the museum, materials for all crafts activities, a Dumbarton House participation patch, an evening snack of period cookies and drink, and continental breakfast of bagels, apples, and juice. Required reservations can be made by calling the Education Department at 202-337-2288 x222. A $100 deposit is due at the time of registration and full payment is due 2 weeks prior to the program.

AMAZING ARCHITECTURE (Juniors)
fulfills all the activity requirements for the “Local Lore” Badge
2007-2008 Dates: November 2, January 26, March 7, May 30
Amazing Architecture turns Junior Girl Scouts into architectural detectives, as they tour Dumbarton House to discover how houses were built in early Washington, create a model city of the future, and spy for historic architecture outside.

HISTORICAL TOYMAKER (Juniors)
fulfills all the activity requirements for the “Toymaker” Badge
2007-2008 Dates: October 19, January 12, February 22, April 11
Historical Toymaker turns Junior Girl Scouts into history detectives, as they tour Dumbarton House to learn about the daily lives of children during the Federal Period. Junior Scouts will create clothespin dolls, an educational board game, and a 19th century brainteaser.

NUMBERS THROUGH TIME (Brownies)
fulfills all the activity requirements for the “Math Fun” Try-It
2007-2008 Dates: October 26, January 4, February 9, May 16
Numbers through Time takes Brownies on an “I-Spy” journey through Dumbarton House in search of architectural shapes commonly found in Federal period houses. After completing the “I-Spy” tour girls create an hourglass, solve a secret code, and invent a 19th-century number puzzle.

2007-2008 Dates: January 25, February 23, March 1, March 14, April 25
During Write into the Past Brownies meet Mrs. Maria Nourse who lived in Dumbarton House 200 years ago. After interviewing Mrs. Nourse in the historic house, girls use a quill pen to report about their experience, play dress-up with period costumes, design and illustrate their own picture book, and tell a group story.
