Georgetown Summer 2010 History Weeks at Dumbarton House and Tudor Place

Tudor Place KidsDumbarton Detectives
June 21-25 OR August 2-6

At Dumbarton House

Children will spend the week searching for clues to learn about early American history. The program features exciting interactive activities and hands-on projects. Children will have the opportunity to try on period clothing, sample period food, play period games, and create a garden!

Tudor Explorers
June 21-25 OR August 2-6 OR August 23-27

At Tudor Place

Explore the enchanting gardens and historic rooms of Tudor Place! As Explorers children uncover historic objects in an archaeological dig, create a sensational garden, construct buildings and landscapes, cook period food, play historic games, and more! Explorers are introduced to traditional arts and crafts, including painting, sewing, and working with clay.

Federal Food, Fashion, and Fun
August 9-13

At Dumbarton House

Children will experience life in Georgetown households 200 years ago, when our nation's capital was founded. Participants will prepare historic snacks, perform early American and African American dances, make music, paint with watercolors, try on period clothing, practice Federal manners, play with historic games and toys, and more!

Tudor PlaceTudor Time Travelers
August 9-13 OR August 23-27

At Tudor Place

This program introduces children to the spectacular natural environment and history of Tudor Place. In the historic gardens and rooms children are transported into the magical world of the past. Hands on activities include scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, historic games, dancing, gardening, and cooking. The week will end with an early American Tea Party hosted by the campers for their families.

Dumbarton House Heroes and Heroines
August 16 - 20

Dolley Madison instructs young visitorsParticipants will discover American heroes and heroines in the early 19th century at one of the gems of Georgetown. Children will learn the importance of the house during the War of 1812 with American's foremost heroine: Dolley Madison! Prepare historic foods and libations, learn deportment and dancing, play games, fashion a turban and card tower, and practice "a stitch in time" plus other interactive activities.

Curator Camp at Tudor Place
August 16-20
9am - 3pm
Ages 12-16
At Tudor Place

Become a curator at Tudor Place! As junior curators, children work behind the scenes to learn how to preserve and protect the museum's collection. Over the course of the week, children will design and install a museum exhibit, learn how to process and clean museum artifacts, learn the basics of architectural conservation, develop a living history character, and participate in a number of hands-on art activities.
