Are you interested in bringing Georgetown’s history to life? Do you have a passion for the decorative arts, early American history or architecture, or museums in general? If so, consider volunteering at Dumbarton House in one of the following capacities.

DOCENTS –Dumbarton House recruits men and women who enjoy working with the public and assisting visitors, to share the museum’s history and collection with the general public.

Docents greet visitors to the museum and provide tours of the house and its collection of Federal Period decorative arts. Trained in the social history and decorative arts of the early 19th century, docents provide a vital link between the history of the house and its visitors. Docents may also choose to volunteer for group tours and special events held at the museum.

Docents are expected to commit 2 weekdays or 1 Saturday per month (10 am-2 pm), and also attend a monthly Volunteer Meeting and enrichment program. Extensive training and ongoing enrichment is provided for all Docents.

To apply to be a docent, please email jmichaelree@dumbartonhouse.org or fill out a volunteer application form (This form opens as a pdf — Download a free pdf reader here.). When your application is received you will be contacted to schedule an interview.

RESEARCHERS –Researchers are needed to work with curatorial and education staff to research topics related to the interpretation of the museum. Possible project topics include occupants of the house, objects in the collection, archival material for preservation, the history of the property, urban slavery in the capital, and early American gardens.

To apply for a research position, please email jmichaelree@dumbartonhouse.org or fill out a volunteer application form (This form opens as a pdf). When your application is received you will be contacted to schedule an interview.

INTERNS – Dumbarton House offers undergraduate and graduate internships on a case-by-case basis. Students interested in gaining experience in American history, historical interpretation, collections management, museum education, decorative arts, and public relations can arrange semester, summer, or academic-year internships. Internship stipends may be available, and academic credit may be arranged in cooperation with a sponsoring college or university. Intern candidates should have completed at least three years of undergraduate studies and be independent and well organized.
